This current body of work evolves from where Lopez's last exhibition at the gallery (April 1999) left off, presenting richly rendered divided spaces such as land-, sea-, or skyscapes, sometimes including an evocative but ambiguous living or inanimate focal point. Lopez weaves a complex web of visual metaphor and personal reflection, which transcends the imagery beyond the immediate luminosity of her expanding palette. In some cases, a tranquil but fragile subject is placed within a setting that suggests an impending ominous or turbulent event. The paintings' symbolic realism employs both atmospheric and shallow space, creating a dreamlike quality that adds intensity to the work.
Lopez's paintings continue to be influenced by her participation in the natural environment. She spends time in close contact with the natural settings where her observed subjects can be found. She describes her paintings as emerging from her imagination or emotive visions that seem to develop on the surface as she paints. The division of space, along with the isolation of components within the space, account for much of their psychological depth. In her work, Lopez is concerned with the capture and placement of her subject matter outside of its expected context, to evoke contemplation on the part of the viewer. Multiple translucent layers of paint, as well as light and form, are also used to accomplish this effect.
