"Until recently, most of my paintings have been about my childhood, about the spaces I lived in -- the streets and rooms, the back yards, the porches and alleys -- transformed by my memory. But lately, as age encroaches on my life, I begin to see myself as an old man dancing in these spaces. I am not sure why. Is it just to show that I am alive and still painting? Or does it indicate that I am anxious about being able to continue to work? What would happen if I stopped dancing? Am I afraid of becoming invisible, of disappearing like the spaces of my childhood? These implications intrigue me."
